areas (and the top 18 to 24 in ophthalmology, psychiatry, rehabilitation,
and rheumatology), only 152 hospitals
(or 3 percent) were ranked in at least
one specialty area. The total number
of citations of excellence for all 16
areas was 683 – meaning the average
number of times a ranked hospital
was cited in one specialty area or
another was 4. 5.
For purposes of identifying
quality, the rankings in 12 of the 16
specialties were determined by reputation, as well as by data including
death rates, procedure volumes, and
the ratio of nurses to patients. In the
case of four of the specialties—
ophthalmology, psychiatry, rehabilitation, and rheumatology—reputation
was the only factor used.
In addition to the rankings of 16
general specialty areas, the annual
U.S. News survey also involves the
ranking of children’s hospitals in 10
areas. These included:
• Cancer
• Neonatology
•;Diabetes & Endocrinology
•;Neurology & Neurosurgery
• Gastroenterology
• Orthopedics
•;Heart & Heart Surgery
• Pulmonology
•;Kidney Disorders
• Urology
In connection with the 2010 chil-
dren’s survey, 150 hospitals (or medi-
cal centers) were contacted. The 10
listings were each limited to the top
30 ranked hospitals in the specialty—
resulting in a total of 300 excellence
citations. The determination of qual-
ity rankings for children’s hospitals
was based on three factors: reputa-
tion, outcomes, and care indicators.
